Kingsways Awards

Kingsway School and its pupils have had many achievements. We would like to share some with you.

Kingsway Primary School has twice been awarded the prestigious "Active Mark Gold Award" for sports by Sport England. The school was given the award in recognition of its commitment to promoting the benefits of physical activity.

Head teacher, Liam Jackson is delighted with the award and said "This is a tremendous achievement for the school. I am delighted that Sport England has recognised our commitment to providing opportunities for physical activity, and the fact that we provide a broad and balanced range of activities. We are also trying to teach children the importance of staying active".

Mr Jackson and his staff would like to thank Miss Pat Suggitt for all the time and effort she put in to the excellent award application, and the enthusiasm she has for all sports, which she shares with her colleagues and children alike.
The school re-applied for Investors in People status in 2005 and successfully met the criteria. It recognised the school's strong commitment to training all the staff and to equip them to fulfil their role effectively within the school.

Kingsway has been awarded the Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark for the second time. It ensures the school has:-

1) An action plan
2) An effective assessment policy
3) Sets targets for improvement
4) Plans for SEN children
5) A progress review for SEN children
6) A commitment to staff development
7) Developed a range of teaching styles to improve basic skills
8) Appropriate teaching and learning materials
9).Involvement of parents developing their children's basic skills
10).A procedure for monitoring the action plan and assessing improvement in basic skills.

The school holds the Quality Mark until January 2009, when it will re-apply.

Kingsway has also been awarded the Health Promoting School Award. To gain this award, 'Health Education' had to be integrated into the curriculum and the school needed to have a strong emphasis on a healthy lifestyle.

Different aspects of the health curriculum were identified and the school had to meet their rigorous criteria. Areas included a non-smoking policy, healthy eating, the environment, the well being of staff and pupils, the wider community and safety needs.

One of our teachers, Miss Suggitt was awarded Advanced Skills status in June 2002. An advanced skills teacher is regarded as an excellent teacher who achieves the very highest standards of classroom practice and who is paid to share her skills and experience with other teachers. She has worked with teachers at Kingsway and also teachers within the East Riding Authority. She teaches in school for 80% of her time and spends the other 20% doing outreach work.

Another teacher Miss Cocliff, was awarded advanced status in 2004. Mrs Butterfield is a leading behaviour teacher for the East Riding area. Teachers from other schools observe her teaching methods to gain insight into effective strategies for managing behaviour in school.

Kingsway School was also awarded the BECTA ICT accreditation for excellence in all areas of ICT in school.

In June 2005, Kingsway School was one of the few schools in the East Riding area (and in the country) to be awarded the coveted Artsmark gold award. The school has to demonstrate arts provision in a wide selection of media, have artists regularly working with the children and be actively involved in art within the community.
